PHP8.5 million worth of party drugs found in BGC hotel

A hotel in the posh Bonifacio Global City (BGC) district in Taguig City appears to have been the site of a shady drug business after Philippine authorities found about PHP8.5 million (US$162,102.43) worth of party drugs in one of its rooms earlier today.

Reports have not identified the establishment by name but according to Metro Manila police chief Major General Guillermo Eleazar, the narcotics were discovered by housekeeping staff inside an open vault, GMA News reported.

He said the housekeepers immediately called the hotel’s security officer and manager, who then called the police. The police conducted an anti-drug operation at around 1am today, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

This allegedly included about 4,000 ecstasy pills, 360 grams of cocaine, 100 grams of high-grade marijuana or kush, and several bottles of liquid shabu (meth). The vault also reportedly contained about PHP720,000 (US$13,731.03) cash and 48 checks worth PHP175 million (US$3,337,402.91), ABS-CBN News reported.

Authorities confiscated the illegal drugs during the operation and arrested a man identified as 44-year-old businessman Domingo Tanyao Uy Jr., who allegedly rented the room for PHP13,000 (US$247.90) a night for six months, ABS-CBN News reported.

Uy is Filipino but reportedly has a Canadian passport, GMA News reported.

According to ABS-CBN News, Uy allegedly recently traveled to Europe and the U.S. 19 times.

Eleazar said he believes Uy is just the “tip of the iceberg” and that they will investigate further into the suspect’s involvement in the illegal drug trade.

Uy will be charged for violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
